Interested in becoming a befriender?

Befriending can be an interesting and valuable way to volunteer. In return for your individual attention and support, as a Befriender you will meet new people, gain experience and make a valuable contribution to someones life and your local community.

As Befrienders volunteer with protected adults we are required to complete enhanced disclosre checks. We also ask that you provide two references and complete the Befriending training course.

The Befriending training course is designed to build upon existing personal qualities and increase confidence in carrying out the befriending role and usually runs up to 4 times a year.

We also learn about the Befrienders likes, dislikes and interests so that we can make a suitable match based on shared interests.

Once matched, Befrienders will keep in regular contact with their Befriendee once a week, fortnightly or at times suitable to both themselves and the befriendee.

How does the Befriending Service support me?

The Befriending Service staff are available by phone or in the office and keep in contact with you throughout the duration of your match.

Befrienders have access to formal and informal support and supervision as well as social events organised by staff to allow Befrienders to share experiences and keep in touch with each other.

What qualities are you looking for?

  • Non- dominating
  • Reliable
  • Respectful of confidentiality
  • Accepting of others

What will I need to give?

Befriending does not involve having formal qualifications, having lots of spare time, spending your own money or doing practical tasks.

The service will pay for your share of expenses and only involves providing social contact.

Befrienders must however be able to give a six month commitment to the Befriending Service once matched.

At this point a review will be held to decide whether or not to continue the match.

Befriending can be a worthwhile volunteering experience for a person who has a degree of self-confidence and self-awareness.

They must be willing to learn and enjoy listening and communicating with others.
