Befrienders

What is Befriending?

The Befriending Service was first introduced by VCED over 11 years ago. There has been approxiamately 3oo hundered successful matches, where both Befriender and Befriendee have expressed their satisfaction and gratitude for the experience.

Befriending is a supported relationship between two people: the person who wishes a befriender and a trained volunteer. Usually it is between two people of the same gender, similar age and interests.

They have regular contact for an agreed time and engage in social activities which are usually enjoyable to both.

The befriending relationship is initiated, supported and monitored by Volunteer Centre Befriending Service staff (Development Officer Beverley Lockhart and Elaine Smith Team Leader).

Befriending aims to make a difference to the quality of life of people experiencing social isolation due to ageing, disability or other changes in their circumstances. It can increase choices about the way people spend their time.

We cannot replace other services you may already have, but we can offer the opportunity to maintain social contacts and brighten part of your day.
